What we do
Legal Buddy is a legal-tech platform serving South Africa and Nigeria, expanding across Africa in 2026. We use AI to listen to people's legal problems, explain their rights in plain language, draft preliminary documents, and connect them with vetted, independently licensed lawyers in their own country.
People reach us through our website, voice mode, WhatsApp, and email. We work in the languages of our launch market and our near-term expansion: English, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, Sesotho, Sepedi, Setswana, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Kiswahili.
Who we serve
Three groups use Legal Buddy:
- Individuals — people facing tenancy disputes, family matters, employment issues, criminal charges, immigration questions, debt and credit, consumer complaints, and any other legal problem where a clear first step matters.
- Small businesses — founders and operators who need contracts drafted, employment agreements written, disputes handled, or ongoing legal counsel without an in-house team.
- Lawyers — qualified professionals who want a steady stream of pre-qualified, well-described matters in their areas of practice.
How the AI works
When you message Legal Buddy, an AI assistant powered by Anthropic's Claude model conducts the intake conversation. It identifies your country and the area of law involved, gives you general information about your rights in that jurisdiction, and — when appropriate — searches our knowledge library and the open web for relevant statutes and guidance.
The AI is an intake and information tool. It does not give legal advice. Every conversation ends with the option to be matched with a real lawyer who can advise on your specific facts.
Why we use WhatsApp
For most of the world — particularly across Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and the Middle East — WhatsApp is the most accessible messaging channel. We meet people where they already are. When you message us on WhatsApp, you get the same intake AI as on the website, plus follow-up from a human team member when needed.
We send messages on WhatsApp only in response to a user-initiated conversation. We do not send unsolicited marketing messages.
Our principles
- Information first, advice never. Lawyers give advice. We give clear, contextualised information so you walk into a lawyer conversation prepared.
- Plain language. Legalese is exhausting to most people facing legal problems for the first time. We translate.
- Your jurisdiction matters. The law in Lagos is not the law in London. Our AI references the actual statutes and conventions of your country.
- Privacy by default. We don't sell your data. We don't train AI models on your conversations. See our Privacy Policy for the detail.
- Human in the loop. Every match is reviewed by our team before we hand you off to a lawyer.
